Now that the gearbox is apart we opened up the oil pump which was a 'gear' aka 'crescent' type pump and used a feeler gauge to check the gap between the gears. We checked the clearances with the workshop manual to make sure the gap was not to large which would indicate excessive wear to the gears. All our clearances were within the manufactures specs. so we put it back together and started reassembling the gearbox.
(below shows me measuring the clearance between the gears in the pump.)

Today we began disassembling an automatic 'Borg Warner model 35' RWD transmission which is a common gearbox fitted to cars from aprox.1964 to 1992. We started by placing the gearbox upside down on a stand so the oil pan could be removed, from there we removed the valve body, this directs the ATF to the valves which controls the clutches, gear changes, brake bands. We then took out the oil pump which supplies pressurized oil to the valve body. The input shaft, clutches and planetary gear set was then removed followed by the output shaft and governer valve.
(below shows the gearbox upside down and the oil pan which needs to be removed)
